Joyce Majiski

Joyce has made her home in the Yukon since 1984, where she initially worked as a biologist and Wilderness guide.  Thematically, Joyce's artistic work reflects a sense of place and connection to the natural world. Fundamentally a printmaker, her repetoir has expanded to include large scale public installations as well as mixed media works and collaborations with other artists. Joyce has been exhibiting her work since 1976 and has participated in many artists residencies and exchanges both nationally and internationally. In 2003 she initiated the Artist in the Parks program in Ivvavik National Park with Parks Canada. Joyce was one of 8 artists selected to participate in the 3 Rivers Journey, organized by CPAWS Yukon in 2003 and in 2008, she was invited to participate in an artists exchange in Yamal, Russia. She offers workshops at her Tuktu Studio, often inviting International artists to teach print and papermaking courses. Joyce was awarded two public commissions for the City of Whitehorse which were installed in 2005 and 2008. She was also the co-ordinator of the LLAMA project, which brought together 3 Canadian and 5 Mexican artists to participate in an artistic residency in 2009. The residency included a series of talks, workshops and a period of time to create work, culminating in the inaugural exhibition "Voz/Voice: the arts of resistance and resilience" in November 2009 in Whitehorse.
