Adán Paredes

Adán Paredes was born in Mexico City in 1961. He studied Archaeology at the National School of Anthropology and History. Archaeology led him to develop a strong connection with the history of the land and ceramics is his preferred means to express his ideas and concerns. He has participated in several collective and solo exhibitions in different parts of Mexico (Mexico City, Puebla, Querétaro, Monterrey, Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende, Xalapa, Yucatán) and abroad (the U.S., Canada, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Dublin, Paris, Yugoslavia, and China). He has received different awards, including: Honorable mention in the First Ceramics Biennale in the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City; a residence at the Gruber Jez Foundation in Yucatán; a residence at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria; a residence at The Banff Centre, Alberta, Canada; and he has been a member of the National System of Creators, a fellowship for artists sponsored by the Mexican government through the National Council for Culture and the Arts. Some of his works form part of the collections of museums and foundations such as the Museum of Contemporary Art of Yucatán, the Gruber Jez Foundation, The Banff Centre, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Oaxaca, the Museum of Latin American Art in Los Angeles, the Painting Collection of the Center of the Arts of Nuevo León, and the Secretariat of the Treasury and Public Credit. He has worked on architectural projects in the offices of Legorreta+Legorreta, Javier Sordo Madaleno, Claudia López Duplan, and Javier Hierro, among others. He currently lives and works in Santo Domingo Barrio Alto, Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico. He continues to create in his Taller Los Alacranes (The Scorpions Workshop) and to offer technical assistance in ceramics to visual artists such as: Francisco Toledo, Alejandro Santiago, Selma Guisande, Juan Manuel de la Rosa, Orland, Luca Bray, Mauricio Cervantes, Yolanda Gutiérrez, Fidel Figueroa, Víctor Guadalajara, Raymundo Sezma, Víctor Pérez, Eduardo Nasta, Lorena Silva, Emilia Sandoval, Elsa Naveda, and Christian Thornton, among others. He has also given classes and lectures at diverse cultural and educational institutions in Mexico and abroad. He is currently working on design innovations with artisans from Oaxaca.
